This is a set of Infantry accoutrements for the Pennsylvania National Guard from the Indian Wars period. The set consists of the Model 1874 waist belt with Hagner style buckle marked NGP, a McKeever cartridge box and a bayonet with scabbard for the model 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifle. The waist belt is the standard leather belt approved for wear in 1874 with a Model 1872 Hagner style belt plate. The black leather belt measures 1 3/4" wide and 38" long. It is adjustable through use of a series of holes in the belt and a brass adjustment hook riveted to the end of the belt. The other end of the belt has the belt plate keeper that has been sewn and riveted in place. Stamped into the leather by the keeper are the letters W S. There is no makers stamp or inspectors cartouche visible on the belt. The belt is still very solid and strong and could be displayed on a mannequin. It does show some significant wear in the buckle area and where the bayonet scabbard rides on the belt. The brass buckle measure 3 1/4" wide and 2 1/8" tall. Within the rectangular plate is an oval, with the letters NGP, representing the Pennsylvania National Guard. The McKeever cartridge box is in very good condition. The black leather is still very supple, has no crazing or any damage at all. The stitching remains very tight and unbroken. There are two rows of 10 web loops inside the box to allow the soldier to carry 20 rounds of 45/70 ammunition. Ink stamped in the center of box on the inside is McKEEVER'S PATENT in an arc over the date Jan 10, 1873. In an arc under the date is J.H. WILSON, Philad'a. The brass finial and closure tab are still present. The front of the box is embossed with an oval and the letters NGP within the oval. This box is the Model 1876 variant, having a slight bulge on one side to accommodate a gun tool. Where the closure tab is sewn onto the back of the box is a stamp with the same information as inked inside the box. The Model 1873 bayonet an scabbard are in the same condition as the rest of this rig, strong but showing quite a bit of use. The belt loop for the scabbard has the brass pivot that is stamped NGP instead of the US issued to regular troops. The metal scabbard some lots of wear from use, but the bayonet itself retains quite a bit of the original bluing. The locking ring is not frozen and functions normally. The flat of the bayonet is stamped with US and an inspectors initial of S. Overall, this is a very nice set of Infantry accoutrements from the Indian Wars period. It is definitely capable of being displayed on a mannequin, and would really add some eye appeal to your Pennsylvania Indian Wars display!
