This is a full stock percussion long rifle from the 1850's. This rifle measures 53 1/2" in length with a 38" octagon barrel. The barrel has an untouched dark patina with a smooth surface and no pitting or surface rust present. The barrel is retained to the stock by iron pins and two tang screws. The bore is .45 caliber and is dark, but is not pitted and shows very strong rifling. The rear buck horn style sight is forged onto the barrel 7" forward of the breech. The front sight is a German silver blade design dovetailed into the barrel. There are no stamps or markings of any kind on the barrel. The barrel has been removed from the stock to check for any stamps on the bottom, there are none present. The three brass ramrod thimbles are securely attached to the stock using iron pins. The lock plate is marked with T. DAVIDSON & Co./CINCINNATI along with floral designs, birds and a dog. Tyler Davidson is listed in the American Gun Makers list as a maker of locks in Cincinnati, Ohio form 1850-1853. The mechanics of the lock work perfectly. The trigger and set trigger are present, and work just like they did when new. The trigger guard, butt plate, nose cap and ram rod thimbles are made of brass. All brass hardware exhibits either a chocolate or golden patina. The barrel and lock have a matching dark patina. The stock is a light brown color, and has been striped to give the appearance of curly maple. There is a small sliver of wood missing along the right side barrel channel just forward of the nipple. With the exception of the wood loss on the right side barrel channel, the barrel channel edges are crisp, and there are no one stress cracks in the stock. This old long rifle has been around since the mid 1800's, and has managed to survive intact and functional. It would be a nice addition to any long rifle collection.
