This is an imported Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry saber from the Civil War period. The sword measures 40" overall, with a blade length of 34 1/2". The blade is slightly curved with a flat spine and measures 1 1/4" at the ricasso. It is a single edged blade with a stopped fuller that measures 25". There are no nicks or any other damage on the true edge of the sword. The blade has taken on an out of the attic black patina with light surface rust over the entire blade. The blade is marked CLAUBERG/SOLINGEN with a lower case g to the right of the stamp on the reverse ricasso. The obverse ricasso is not marked in any way. The blade has never been sharpened. The brass hilt has also taken on a black patina, with areas of the guard showing more of a dark chocolate look. Lightly scratched on the front side of the guard, just below the blade, is the date 1861. There is no throat washer with this blade. The guard is made to represent a washer cast into it. The wooden grip still has much of the original leather wrap. The areas where the leather is missing expose the string that was wound around the grip to form the ribs when the leather grip was applied, first time I've seen that. The twisted brass wire is almost completely non existent, just a couple of small pieces sticking out from under the pommel cap. The brass pommel cap shows the same undisturbed black patina as the rest of the brass. The peen appears to be unmolested. The hilt and pommel cap are very tight on the grip and blade. This one came into the shop out of the southwest Virginia area, reportedly being found in an old house near Abingdon. Overall this is a nice example of a no frills, imported heavy Cavalry saber that could have seen service on either side during the Civil War. It will make a nice addition to any Civil War Cavalry collection.
