Confederate Dog River Cavalry Saber

This is a Confederate "Dog River" Cavalry saber from the Civil War. The sword measures 41" overall, with a blade length of 35". The blade is slightly curved with a rounded spine and measures 1 1/8" at the ricasso. It is a single edged blade with an unstopped fuller that measures 24 1/2". There are a couple of small nicks on the true edge of the sword, none noticeable to the eye. The blade has taken on a dark, steel gray patina with a couple of small spots of light pitting. The blade is unmarked, leaving the true identity of the maker unknown, hence the mystical "Dog River" production facility. The blade has never been sharpened. The brass hilt has a beautiful, untouched medium chocolate patina, with a hint of that Confederate "red brass" tint showing through. On the front side of the guard, partially covered by the washer, are four punch dots and the Roman numerals XVIII. A plain quillon tops the hilt, suggesting this could have been an officers sword. A brass ferrule is located at the front of the grip, at the guard, and has a patina matching the rest of the brass on the hilt. The original leather washer is still intact and the blade is still tight on the grip. The wooden grip shows only traces of the original leather wrap. The wood has aged to the point of being black, causing it to appear still covered in leather. There are no cracks in the grip. The single strand of iron wire is complete and still on the grip. The brass pommel cap shows a bit more of the reddish tint than the guard, caused by the high copper content in the brass. The peen appears to be unmolested. The hilt, pommel cap and ferrule are a little loose, and deflect slightly when handled. Overall this is a very nice example of a no frills, Confederate manufactured Cavalry saber that saw service during the Civil War. The manufacturer is unknown, but there are a couple of Kenansville traits present with this one. It will complement any Confederate Cavalry collection.
