This is a Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber from the Civil War era. This sword has an overall length of 37 3/4", with a blade length of 32 1/4". The steeply swept blade has a steel gray patina, with some of the original bright finish showing here and there. The edge is free of any nicks, chips or dings. The reverse ricasso is stamped AMES MFG CO./CHICOPEE/MASS. The obverse side is stamped U.S./JT/1860. The original leather washer is missing in action. The hilt is made of brass and has a single knucklebow with the number 75 stamped on the reverse side. The quillion is unmarked and has no ornamental engraving, the same is true of the pommel cap. The inspectors initial of JT and WAT are stamped into the pommel cap. The peen remains undisturbed. The wooden grip is still covered in the original leather, which shows honest wear from everyday use. The double strand brass wire is still tight to the wrap. All the brass has taken on an aged mustard yellow patina. The iron scabbard is in very good condition. It has a smooth, mottled brown and steel gray appearance. The scabbard body is dent free and has very little pitting, mostly around the throat area, the throat itself is missing from the scabbard. The two iron mounts and suspension rings are in good condition and show moderate wear. The drag is unmarked and also shows moderate wear. Overall this is a good condition example of a Light Artillery Saber used during the Civil War. And with that pre war date, who knows, it could have been in a southern arsenal at the outbreak of the war and been used by old Johnny Red Legs! These swords were more of a traditional item than a combat weapon. If you collect "Red Legs" items this one will do your collection some justice!
