This is an excavated Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber from the Civil War era. This sword has an overall length of 37 1/2", with a blade length of 31 1/2". The steeply swept blade is heavily rusted and has a reddish brown patina, with just traces of the original finish here and there. The edge has numerous nicks along the blade, some small and some not so small. I am unable to make out any stamps that might have been on the ricasso, as the throat from the scabbard is rusted onto the blade. The hilt is made of brass and has a single knucklebow. There appear to be numbers stamped on the obverse side of the guard, near the blade, but are not legible. I suspect that they are a rack number. The quillion is unmarked and has no ornamental engraving, the same is true of the pommel cap. The peen remains undisturbed. The wooden grip is no longer on the hilt, having rotted away. All the brass has taken on an aged, black patina. This Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber was dug in the Charleston, South Carolina area. The digger would not give any details as to the exact location it was recovered from. Overall this is a fantastic condition example of a Light Artillery Saber used during the Civil War in excavated condition. While the blade is heavily rusted, there is no flaking or scale. The blade is as tight to the hilt as the day it was dropped. You just don't see full length excavated swords available on the market. This will definitely make your dug relic collection stand out in a crowd!
