This is a Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry sword blade in fair condition. It has an overall length of 38 1/2", with a blade length of 33". The blade width at the hilt is 1 1/4", and the spine is 1/4" wide at the hilt. The curve of the blade is indicative of the French 1822 Hussar Cavalry saber that the Model 1840 was based upon. The sword blade still retains the original bright finish, with age spots and small areas of light surface rust scattered from one end of the blade to the other. The reverse side of the blade is stamped with the initials PDL within a serrated oval. Peter D Luneschloss was a sword maker in Solingen, Germany. During the Civil War he manufactured swords for Tiffany & Co, a retailer in New York who sold the swords to the US government under contract. This blade would make an excellent candidate for restoration.
