This is a United Confederate Veterans top hat from the late 1800's. There are numerous photographs of Confederate soldiers wearing these top hats during the war. It seems that most of them were from units deployed in the Western theater, from Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia and Louisiana. The condition of this felt material hat is very good. The felt is a light gray color, and has no moth damage. There are three small holes, but they aren't from moths. The 1/4" wide tan hat band is pretty frayed on the right side. The crown stands 7" tall and the brim is 2" and is rolled. There is no sweatband in the hat. There are no makers marks or labels anywhere. The top of the hat has a diamond shaped vent, made up of 9 small holes. It looks as though the veteran attached his own chin strap to the hat. This top hat really stands out all on it's own and would add to any UCV collection!
