This is an excavated lance blade used by the Mexican Army in the early 1800's. An example almost identical to this lance blade can be found in the American Polearms 1526-1865 written by Rodney brown on page 80. These lances were the preferred weapon of the Californio Lancers. This unit was made up of California born Mexicans, and they had mastered the art of fighting with a lariat and lance. The Californios would use their lariats to pulled opposing cavalry off their mounts and then put their nine foot long lance to good use. They were especially effective against the Infantry. The high water mark for the Californios and their lances would be near San Diego, California in December of 1846 during the Battle of San Pascual. This lance head came into the shop with no history, and was originally thought to have been a flag finial. Further research shows that it is not, and is a lance head used from the 1840's through the 1860's.
