This book is a first edition written by John D McAulay, published in 1981, the narrative is 122 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos and diagrams. This work concentrates on the carbines issued to the Federal cavalry during the Civil War. It stresses the Army Ordnance Department procurement of the breech loading carbine from the start of the Civil War in April 1861 to the end of the fiscal year ending 30 June, 1866. The government procurement charts and ordnance contracts that appear in the book were taken directly from Ex. Document 99, 40th Congress, 2nd session. The order of appearance of the weapons was determined through the largest government procurement, the Spencer, to the smallest procurement of the Wesson carbine. This is a very valuable reference to the Civil War Federal cavalry collector, and to the Civil War collector in general. This paperback book is in very good condition.
