This is a rifleman's belt axe from Northeast Tennessee circa early 1800's. It recently came into the shop along with a small "possibles" bag from the revolutionary war period. The iron head is 3" wide at the cutting edge and 1 1/8" on the polled side. Just traces of the added steel on the cutting edge are visible. The overall width of this little axe is 5 1/4". One side of the head is cracked. The crack runs from the top of the eye all the way around. That would explain why there is no haft with this one. It came with verbal history of being found in an old home in Rogersville, Tennessee, along with the possibles bag. One thing is for sure, this one has some wonderful eye appeal!
