This is a late 1800's hewing broad axe head from the southwestern Virginia area. It measures approximately 9 1/4" wide and 8 1/2" high. This one is double beveled so as to produce a scalloped cut. These type axes were used for chopping, notching and hewing, or dressing down, logs for use in ship building, log structure buildings and timber framing. This one was made in the late 1800's and has a couple of stamps, or touch marks on one side. Clearly stamped is J WILLIAM/CAST STEEL, along with a touchmark that looks to be MATT. It weights approximately 6 1/2 pounds and no longer has the haft. This came in to the shop from the Stanleytown, Virginia area.
