Early Trade Axe From Southwestern Virginia

This is an early trade axe that came out of southwest Virginia circa 1700's to mid 1800's. The head measures 8 3/4" wide and 4" at the widest point. The eye is round and the head has no poll. I do not believe this to be a blacksmith made head, but a European import. There are touch marks on either side of the head. One side has tow recessed squares that contain what appear to be the letters M and W, the opposite side has the letters JP. This old axe head is in very solid condition, with no scaling or rust present. The wooden haft measures 18" in length and fits the axe head perfectly. I believe it's made out of oak, but don't quote me on that! I do believe that it is probably a replacement, but not exactly sure how old it is. This piece will fit nicely into any Native American, early Colonial or trapper collection.
