This is a regulation pattern 1839 US waist belt plate on the original belt. The belt length is 31 1/4" and is 1 3/4" wide. The leather shows honest wear but is still very supple. There is very little loss of the dyed black, just a couple spots on the upper back side. There are no cracks, rips, tears or weak spots anywhere on the belt. A makers stamp and inspector's stamp are visible on the outside of the belt, near the keeper. The belt plate has been on this piece of leather for a long time. The belt plate is in very good condition. The front side has the easily recognizable US letters. There are just a couple of small dimples and scratches, mostly on the high points of the lettering. All three hooks are present, with the two attachment hooks being of the arrow type. The back side is fully leaded, but does not have a maker mark visible. Every Union soldier wore one of these rigs, usually supporting a cap box and bayonet scabbard. I have no doubt that this one was worn by some Northern boy who faced the elephant! It would go perfect with your Yankee Infantry collection.
