This is a Federal cap box manufactured during the American Civil War. The maker mark on the inside flap is of W.H. WILKINSON. Wilkinson had contracts in 1862-63 for 9,000 sets of Infantry accoutrements in .58 caliber and 2000 sets of cavalry accoutrements. He also produced infantry accoutrements under contract with Josiah Cummings from August 1862 through April 1863. Wilkinson also had a contract from October 1864 through March 1865 for 6000 sets of Infantry accoutrements, 10,000 sets of cavalry accoutrements, 10,000 Blakeslee's cartridge boxes, bridles and halters. The stamp reads "W.H. WILKINSON/MAKER/SPRINGFIELD MASS.". The leather on this pouch is a little dry, but still very pliable. The outer flap shows minor crazing along the top of flap. The stitching is still very strong and has no breaks. The brass finial is present, the closure tab is still reporting for duty and is 100% intact! The two belt loops are present, but one is broken at the top, where it enters the box. Incredibly the wool and pick are still with the box! The little cap box still displays great, and would be a nice addition to any Civil War display.
