This is a set of saddlebags from the 1800's. They measure 34 1/2" across, with each bag measuring 7 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" wide. These bags are smaller than most, and they have the unique characteristic of opening from the front, instead of having a flap that covers the top of the bag. The yoke does not have a hole in the center for a stud, as do the M1859 McClellans, nor do they have a slot to attach each bag to the rear staples on the saddle tree. This set of saddlebags is in fair condition. The leather is stiff and dry, but still a little pliable. The leather is crazed and has a pebbled texture to it. Each bag has a square removable box, or tray. There are no slots or dividers in the tray, so I'm not exactly sure what they were intended for. The front of the bags closed by using two flaps that closed over each other, and secured with small straps and roller buckles. Only one of the buckles is still attached to the outer flap, another buckle is inside one of the bags, along with a strap. There are no repairs and all the stitching is still very tight. I'm not exactly sure what the intent of this type of saddlebags was, but they are pretty interesting!
