This is a five button United Confederate Veterans Cavalry coat/jacket made by Simon Abrahams & Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania circa 1900. It is constructed of six panels of high quality gray wool material. There are five buttons on the single breasted opening. The two piece buttons all have a five pointed star on the face, which could represent either Texas or Mississippi. These are the only buttons on the jacket, as the cuffs have none. There are no back marks on any of the buttons. There is a makers label sewn on the inner breast pocket. It reads "S. Abrahams & Co. Philada, PA. Manufacturers of High Grade UNIFORMS". Simon Abraham is listed in Bazelon & McGuinn's book, "Directory of American Military Goods Dealers & Makers 1785-1915" on page 1 as having been in the the uniform and military goods business from 1896 through 1935 at various locations in Philadelphia. The jacket is lined with a light brown cotton material. The sleeves are lined with a cotton muslin material, and are hand stitched. There are no exterior pockets, just the single pocket on the inner right breast. Stamped on the pocket, below the makers label, in purple ink is MEMPHIS 1901 UCV. The word Memphis and the letters UCV are arced to form a circle, with the date of 1901 in the center. There are a couple of spots of moth damage on the left shoulder. The machine stitching is still very strong and tight in all but one or two spots. The stitching on the right sleeve lining is broken near the bottom. There are no stains or any serious damage anywhere on the jacket. The photo's show all the areas affected. The yellow stand up collar and cuffs really make this old UCV jacket stand out. The only real flaw with the jacket is the fact it has no name in it. In the condition it is in, identified this jacket would be priced substantially higher. This would really look great in a UCV display with a saddle, slouch hat and some other Cavalry accoutrements!
