This is a Model 1859 Sabre designed and patented by J.E.B. Stuart. The Stuart attachment was invented in 1859 by 1st Lieutenant Stuart as a simpler method of attaching the saber to the Cavalry saber belt. It uses a single brass hook attachment with two captive slings, sometimes referred to as drops. This saber attachment hooked into the bottom brass ring on the Model 1851 saber belt. The two drops were attached to the suspension rings of the scabbard with snap hooks. Then when the trooper no longer required to the use of his saber, he simply removed the attachment from his belt. This prevented having the two empty drops from hanging loosely on the belt. This saber attachment was used at least through 1891, as evidenced by Ordnance Memorandum No. 29, Horse Equipments and Cavalry Accoutrements of 1891. The brass pieces on this attachment all have a deep, golden patina. The hook on this one has no makers mark, nor do the drops. There is some light crazing with the leather, as well as some color loss. All in all this saber attachment is in very good condition. If you have a Civil War or Indian Wars cavalry collection this will really look good with it!
