This is a US holster made for the .38 caliber revolver used during World War II. This russet leather holster is in very good issued condition. It was manufactured by Boyt, the Walter Boyt Saddlery Company of Des Moines, Iowa. The BOYT stamp is very visible, but there is no date. Ink stamped below the BOYT stamp is an ink stamp that reads MRT/JAN 1962. This means the leather had a mildew resistant treatment applied in January of 1962. During WWII the military purchased .38 caliber revolvers from Colt and Smith and Wesson. Colt was the predominant supplier of the Army, while the Navy purchased their revolvers from Smith and Wesson. The .38 caliber "Victory" model was the standard issue weapon to Navy air crews during the war. All stitching, rivets and closure stud are extremely tight and secure to the holster. All of the brass rivets, eyelet and closure stud have some light verdigris showing. The bail that is used to attach the holster to a web belt shows plenty of wear, with all of the blacking missing. The holster is embossed with a US within an oval. The interior of the holster shows some honest wear. The russet colored leather shows plenty of wear from use, but is in very good condition. This is a very nice holster and will compliment any collection.
