This is a US Model 1816 socket bayonet manufactured for the .69 caliber muskets used during the Civil War. This model of bayonet was the predecessor to the US Model 1855 bayonet. This bayonet has an overall length of 19 1/4", with a blade length of 16". The socket and blade shows very little of the bright finish, having turned a steel gray patina. The flat part of the blade near the socket is crisply stamped with US. There are no other stamps on the bayonet. A riveted Pattern 1857 scabbard accompanies this bayonet. The leather is in good condition, with the normal amount of crazing for a piece of 155 year old leather. The scabbard tip and frog are securely attached. The blade has a 9" fuller, indicating that it was not updated to be a "Replacement" Model 1816 that had a full length fuller. The M1816 bayonets, along with the long arms they were used with, were in Federal Arsenals all through the south before the outbreak of the Civil War. It most likely saw service during the Civil War. This is a good example of a Model 1816 bayonet and pre war scabbard that was used on the .69 caliber muskets used during the Civil War.
