This is a group of five bullets recovered on private property in Madison County, Tennessee, near the site of the Battle of Jackson, that took place 19 December, 1862. This is considered to be a battle of Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest's expedition into West Tennessee. Approximately 2,000 Union soldiers under the command of Colonel Adolph Englemann repulsed a mounted attack made by a portion of Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest's 2100 man Cavalry Brigade. Englemann's two infantry regiments engaged Forrest's Cavalry near the Salem Cemetery, stopped the assault, and then withdrew closer to the town of Jackson. During this engagement, two of Forrest's columns tore up track of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, north and south of the city. This rail line was being used to supply Major General Ulysses Grant's army, and the destruction of the railroad was one of Forrest's main objective of this expedition. Union forces suffered only six casualties in killed, wounded and missing. Forrest's casualties are unknown. The outcome of the battle was considered a Confederate victory. These five bullets were all recovered on private property.
