Five Excavated Bullets From Fairfax County, Virginia

This is a group of bullets recovered on private property in Fairfax County Virginia, near the site of the Battle of Chantilly, that took place 1 September, 1862. This is considered the last battle of the Northern Virginia campaign. Approximately 6,000 Union soldiers under the separate commands of Major General Philip Kearny and Brigadier General Isaac Stevens were engaged by approximately 20,000 Confederate soldier under the command of Major General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. During the battle both Union commanders were killed, along with 1300 Union soldiers being killed, wounded or missing. Confederate casualties were approximately 800 killed, wounded or missing. The outcome of the battle was considered neither a Union or Confederate victory. These five bullets have all been fired, and recovered on private property.
