This is a camp hatchet/carpenter's hatchet from Northeast Tennessee from the mid 1800's. It just walked into the shop along with another long rifle! The iron head is 3 3/4" wide at the cutting edge and 1 7/8" on the polled side. The head is notched for nail pulling. The overall length of this hatchet is 16 1/2". There is no wedge in the haft to keep the head secure, so it is a little loose. There is just a bit of play as the wood has shrunk over the years. The period haft, or handle, is in very good condition. There are no cracks or splits, and just a couple of small areas of wood loss present at the base. It came with verbal history of being found in an Rogersville, Tennessee, along with the long rifle. One thing is for sure, this one has been together for a long time and has some wonderful eye appeal!
