This is a Romanian made AKM Type I bayonet and scabbard from the 1960's. The AKM rifle was introduced in 1960, an updated version of the AK-47. One of the updates was a bayonet lug. The bayonet manufactured to go with the AKM was a revolutionary as the original AK-47. It incorporated a number of features, making it a very versatile bayonet. The grip and pommel are one piece and made of plastic, while the blade is made of stainless steel. This combination of materials made the bayonet impervious to rust, rot or any other condition caused by inclement weather or climate. The 5 3/4" length blade is unfullered, has saw teeth along the spine and terminates in a clip point. The steel scabbard body has a lug at the tip that engages with a window cut in the blade, allowing the the two to be used as a wire cutter. The scabbard body has a rubber insulator to facilitate cutting electrical wires. The scabbard is equipped with a loop to attach a leather belt hanger to it. The leather retention strap doubles as a means for extra grip when used as a combat knife. The reddish brown grips identify this bayonet as being Romanian made. The bayonet has serial number AU 6910, while the scabbard is numbered AX 1376. The bayonet and scabbard both should wear from use, but were not abused. This bayonet can still be fixed to a weapon.
