This is a group of bullets recovered on private property near the Fredericksburg Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. There are sixty nine bullets total, some of them dropped, some fired and a few that have been melted. Most of three ring .58 caliber bullets, there are a few .69 caliber three ring bullets. There are also three .69 caliber balls, along with a hand full of assorted pistol bullets of various caliber and a couple of cleaners. These are from an old collection out of Virginia that was dug back in the 1960's. Apparently it was a lot easier to obtain permission back then to dig. Almost every bullet in the case is marked with a letter and number, from A1 through B3, suggesting a grid was laid out before the digging commenced. It is a pretty extensive collection of bullets from a very famous battle area, some are Confederate and some are Union bullets. The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought 11 -15 December, 1862, in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia. Approximately 122,000 Union soldiers under the command of Major General Ambrose Burnside, met a little over 78,000 Confederate soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee at Fredericksburg. This battle is considered to be the most one sided of the war, with Union casualties more than twice that of the Confederates. Burnside ordered multiple frontal assaults across open ground into Confederate forces entrenched on Marye's Heights. Union casualties were approximately 12,653 wounded, killed or missing, while the Confederates suffered 5377 casualties. This is a very nice group of dug bullets representative of the Battle of Fredericksburg fought in December 1862. The bullet come in an attractive wooden display case that measures 18" wide, 12" tall, 2" deep and is lined with red felt.
