This is a brass shell case for a US 3" field gun made into trench art. The case is 10 3/4" tall and 3 3/8" across the base. The brass has turned a beautiful dark golden color. What appear to be the artist's initials in old English script are near the lip of the case. There is also a horse shoe with a horse's head depicted near the top of the case. Wrapped around the shell is an incredibly detailed Oriental style dragoon. The detail is absolutely amazing! I haven't been able to decipher the year from the head stamp on this case yet. The stamp reads AM LOT 129 - 9 / 3 In FG / LOT 1319 NYAB. These shells were used with the US Army's Model 1902 field gun. The M1902 had two other variants, the M1904 and the M1905. This gun was in the service of the Army from 1902 through the 1920's. If you collect trench art this one is for you!
