This is a German identification tag, known as a "dog tag", from World War II. These tags were used to positively identify the soldier when he was killed, and to verify his identity if his body were ever to be exhumed. The German dog tag was made in two sections, each containing identical information. If the soldier were killed, the top section remained with the body while the lower half was turned into the unit headquarters. This oval shaped tag is made of zinc, which became prominent in late 1941, early 1942. The tag is complete, both sections are still completely attached. The tag is stamped 2/Inf. Ers. Btl. 88 with the number 223 below. That represents 1st company, Infantry Replacement Battalion 88, and the soldiers roster number of 223. The soldiers name or blood type has not been stamped on either half of the tag. There is some oxidation on the back side of the back, but the front side is mainly free of oxidation. This identification tag is in very good condition, and will look great in your WWII German personal effects display.
