This is a pewter figurine from Chilmark entitled "The Rescue", sculpted by Francis J. Barnum in 1987. The pewter figure of a Union Cavalryman coming to the aid of a wounded comrade comes on an attractive wooden base that measures 7" by 5 1/2" and is approximately 6" tall. A limited number of 2500 of The Rescue figurines were made, this one being #306 of 2500. Barnum went into great detail, showing the Union Cavalryman mounted attempting to rescue a wounded fellow soldier. The trooper is in the act of grasping his wounded friends outstretched left hand with his right hand. He is wearing a shell jacket, trousers with cavalry stripe, knee boots, gauntlets and a kepi. The quatrafoil on his kepi suggests that he may be an officer. His waist belt, with brass M1851 rectangle buckle has a cap box, Model 1860 flap holster and a brass hilt saber with scabbard. On the Model 1859 McClellan saddle he has a bedroll, Model 1859 McClellan saddle bags, canteen and a possibles bag. The injured soldier wears a five button sack coat and tattered trousers, the right leg of the trousers missing below the knee. He has a bandage around his head. His right foot is bare, while the left foot still wears a boot with a spur. A broken artillery saber and scabbard, discarded canteen and smashed cannon wheel lay on the ground. This will make a great desk ornament or a decorator piece in your war room, perhaps the perfect birthday or Christmas gift!
