This is an authentic used stock for a Model 1841 "Mississippi" rifle. The Model 1841 rifle was produced by the Harper's Ferry Armory from 1846 through 1855. They were also manufactured under contract by Remington, Robbins, Kendall & Lawrence, Robbins & Lawrence, Tryon, Eli Whitney and the Palmetto Armory of Columbia, South Carolina. Between the National Armory and independent contractors a little over 70,750 of this model were manufactured. This walnut stock, measuring 43 1/2" long, came in from the local southwestern Virginia area. The stock is still in good condition, with no major cracks or wood loss. There is some minor wood loss along the barrel channel and around the lock area. The stock must have been stored indoors in a fairly regulated climate. It shows no evidence of damage by insects or water, and retains a decent appearance. All of the hardware has been removed from the stock. The initials JLS are deeply carved into the left side stock comb. There are no cartouches visible on the stock who indicate who manufactured it.
