This is a set of four Bibles and one Book of Popery, all printed prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. The smallest is the Book of Popery, printed in Philadelphia in 1842. On the inside cover of this book, written in cursive ink is a name of "Hu Graham and Tazewell Ten 1855". This small book is in overall good condition, having no damage, loose covers or water damage. There are two identical bibles, containing the old and new testaments that were printed in New York by the American Bible Society in 1855. One was given to a daughter by a mother, and is written in cursive ink, "Cassie Rogan from Ma Dec 1st 1868", it also states she lives in Russellville, Tenn. This Bible is in fair condition, having some staining and light water damage. The second American Bible Society printed in 1855 is in very similar condition. The front cover is loose, but has not become detached. There are areas of light water damage and some staining. There is a paper tag that has been type written showing this Bible belonged to "Mrs. Margaret R. Miller, Russellville, Tenn". Below the typed tag, written in cursive ink is "from grandfather's Hu Graham's library at Tazewell Tenn". The fourth Bible, containing only the New Testament, was printed in New York by the American Bible Society in 1845. On the inside cover of this Bible, written in cursive ink is "This testament is intended for use in the Tazewell Ten Roger meeting March 1861 Graham" Below that written in cursive ink is the name "M.R. Millar". This Bible is in the best condition, remaining very solid throughout. There is very little staining or water damage on this one. The last Bible is the largest one, and in the worst condition of the set. The front cover has become detached. It too is a New Testament printed in New York by the American Bible Society in 1855. A blue and white ticking material cover has been fabricated for the Bible. The inside cover reveals this Bible belonged to "Hu Graham Tazewell Ten 1863 For Family Reading", written in cursive ink. There is some more family history written in the front of the Bible. This entire set came from eastern Tennessee, from to families, the Miller's and the Grahams. All five books are still legible enough to be read, If you collect pre Civil War Bibles, you should really take a good look at these!
