This is an original drawing done by Winslow Homer and printed by Harper's Weekly. The drawing is dated 17 January, 1863 and is in excellent condition. It measures 15 1/4" wide and is 10" tall. The drawing is matted and mounted to a piece of foam board and is protected by shrink wrap. This one page from the Harper's Weekly looks just the way it did when it was printed over 156 years ago. There are no smudges, stains, rips, tears, creases or folds on the page. The drawing is of four soldiers and eight slaves working within a trench system. The foreground shows a Confederate officer with drawn sword, and four of the slaves reacting to a nearby shell burst. In the background are the three infantrymen and the remaining slaves. The drawing is titled " A SHELL IN THE REBEL TRENCHES." It also states the drawing was done by Homer, and is dated 17 January, 1863. The article looks like it could have been printed yesterday! The shrink wrap covering is torn in a couple of small spots on this one. If you collect Civil War documents this piece will fit right in!
