This is a letter written to an unknown party and simply addressed "Dear Sir". The letter was written on 18 October, 1861 by Charles Gayam. The content of the letter is inviting the addressee to visit his place for a hunting trip and to examine it for possible sale. The letter is one single sheet of paper that measures 8 3/8" wide and 10 3/4" tall. It begins by letting him know that he was disappointed that the gentleman did not make good on his promise to visit him during the summer. He also states that he was probably busy supplying blankets to the Army, but that if the cities defense did not require him then he should come visit and hunt partridge, rabbits and squirrels. He is to bring his own dog and gun and while he is hunting examine Gayam's place should he disposed to sell it on his way to Europe when "Lincoln should permit". Gayam gives him directions on how to get to his place and some information about the place. The letter comes from Parish St Helena, Louisiana. Gayam also excuses himself for not remembering the gentleman's christian name. There is no war time content, aside form the supply of blankets for the army. The hand writing is very clear and legible. There is no punctuation used in the letter, which makes it a little difficult to read at times. This is a very early war dated personal letter from a private citizen of Louisiana. It would really add greatly to any document collection.
