This is an identified United Confederate Veterans kepi circa 1900 - 1910. The gray material has great color and shows minimal moth damage, about three spots. This is a medium size kepi made in the traditional Civil War design. The stitching is very strong throughout this veterans hat. The black visor is in great condition with very little crazing, but is loosely attached to the body of the cap. The leather chin strap is retained by 1902 Great Seal buttons. The buttons are so tight I can't make out a back mark. On the front of the kepi is the crossed rifles of Infantry from the Indian wars period with the letter B above. This represented Company B, Confederate Veterans of Nashville, Tennessee. The inside of the kepi shows honest wear from use. There is no sweatband present, I'm not sure of there ever was one. There is a piece of white card stock sewn into the top of the kepi about the size of a business card. It reads "Mr C R Cawlhon's Cap. Thanks". A little research found that Corporal Charles Calhoun mustered into Company A, 38th Tennessee Infantry on 15 August, 1861. He was surrendered on 26 April, 1865 at Durham Station, North Carolina as part of the 3rd Tennessee Consolidated Infantry. Corporal Calhoun went on to join Company B, Confederate Veterans of Nashville. This beautiful old veterans hat would display great on a UCV mannequin, especially with a frock coat!
