This is a Japanese Samurai Zunari Kabuto from the mid Edo period circa 1750 - 1800. The hatchi formed the foundation for the samurai helmet. They were constructed of metal plates riveted together, anywhere from 3 to 100 plates. The number of plates represented the status and standing of the wearer. The Zunari Kabuto, or head shaped helmet, is an exception to the rule. Most Zunari helmets were constructed using a five plate design, however, there are also Zunari's made with just three and four plates. The four iron plates of this Zunari have had black lacquer applied to help waterproof the helmet. The visor, or mabizashi, is still present and has also had black lacquer applied to the top and underneath. This type of samurai helmet does not have a small opening at the top of the hatchi, known as the tehen. The neck guard, or shikoro, consists of three circular iron plates that have blown black lacquer applied. The lacing connecting the plates may be of later time period. The mounting point for the crest displayed on the front of the kaboto, called a tsunamoto, is not used on this helmet. Instead, the mon, or family crest is painted on the front of the helmet. I'm still working to determine who's family crest this is. Each side of the helmet has an ear shaped fukigashi, with black lacquer applied. The shinobi-no-o, or chin cords, appear to be of a later period also. They are very similar to the blue and white ticking material popular in the US during the mid 1800's. The inside of the helmet has a blue lining. It is possible that this too may have been replaced or updated. The exterior of the helmet is in I believe it's original, unaltered state. There are several small spots where the lacquer has chipped off to reveal the bare iron plates. It is not uncommon for a helmet this old to have had the cloth pieces either replaced, or upgraded over the course of time. This Samurai Zunari helmet is in good condition, and has some awesome display power!
