This is a set of cast iron stirrups from the mid 1800's. This style of stirrup is referred to as a "swinging" stirrup. These are a two piece setup that is hinged at the branches of the stirrup. The pivoting action allows the riders foot to remain motionless on the tread, relieving stress on the ankle. The eyelets for the stirrup leathers also pivot. These style stirrups were ideal for the early 1800's plantation horseman on a fox hunt, jumping fences and other obstacles. This set measures 5" tall, 5 1/2" wide and have a tread width of 2 3/8". The rectangular eyelets were made to accept 1 1/2" wide leather straps. The top of the treads have simple etching to help improve the gripping surface. The spurs have a dark, aged patina with no surface rust. It is quite possible that these could have been used during the Civil War, especially in the early war period. These were also found in an old log cabin in West Tennessee.
