This is a US World War II M1 helmet and liner. The shell was manufactured by the McCord Radiator company, the liner was made by the Hawley Company. The heat stamp of 195B puts this one being manufactured in May/June 1942. The helmet has the original dark green paint, retaining about 75% of it. The cork texturing remains on about 25% of the helmet, mainly around the rim. The helmet shell is dent free. There are no stress cracks in the shell either. The stainless steel band around the rim retains the majority of the paint. The rim has a front seam stainless steel band. The chin strap bails are fixed. The chin straps are sewn directly to the bails and are OD #3 in color. The long strap has a raised bar brass buckle and adjuster. The strap shows moderate wear and is free of frays, rips and is moderately stained. The short strap has the brass hook to attach to the buckle on the long strap. This strap also shows moderate use and moderate staining. The shell has no net on it. The Hawley liner is from mid 1942 as is the steel shell. There is no visible stamp or ink marks in the inside top of the liner. The liner shows the original color as well as being heavily decorated by the soldier. In several locations the name H. TAYLOR can be seen, along with his initials H.T. On the front of the liner is a date of JAN. 5-1943, SOLOMON ISLANDS along with 8 hash marks on the rim of the liner. The liner is intact and shows moderate wear with moderate damage. The suspension cloth is cotton and khaki in color. It is retained to the liner by galvanized steel A washers. The sweatband is complete, shows extensive staining from wear and is broken on the right side. The entire suspension system shows moderate use. The cotton suspension straps show light soiling. The garters for the liner chin strap are both present. The liner chin strap is present but broken on one end at the garter. This is a very good example of an M1 combat helmet from WWII with an early and rare liner. No matter what branch, every World War II serviceman wore one of these. It will compliment any collection.
