Th is is a rifleman's belt axe from Northeast Tennessee circa mid 1800's. It recently came into the shop along with a couple of powder horns and a small "possibles" bag. The iron head is 2 3/8" wide at the cutting edge and 1 3/4" on the polled side. Just traces of the added steel on the cutting edge are visible. The overall length of this little axe is 9 3/4". A steel wedge has been driven into the haft to keep the head secure. There is just a bit of play as the wood has shrunk over the years. The period haft, or handle, is in very good condition. There are no cracks, splits or wood loss present. On the bottom of the haft is one small brass tack. It came with verbal history of being found in an old barn in Piney Flats, Tennessee, along with the powder horns and possibles bag. One thing is for sure, this one has been together for a long time and has some wonderful eye appeal!
