This is a Grand Army of the Republic buckle on the original white leather belt. The GAR was a veterans organization that was formed by Benjamin Stephenson on 6 April, 1866. It was composed of Union veterans of the American Civil War. In the beginning the GAR was available as a way for veterans to meet and stay in contact with each other after the war ended. They soon grew into one of the most powerful political organizations of their time. The off white leather belt has an overall length of 44" and is 1 5/8" wide. The belt adjuster, buckle and keeper are all present and made of brass. The buckle face measures 3" wide and 1 3/4" high. It has the GAR medallion in the center and the letters G A R surrounding it. This one has a frog for a bayonet. Apparently the owner of this belt was at one time part of a color guard or honor guard. The leather belt shows signs of wear from honest use, but still contrasts well with the brass! The frog shows plenty of wear from use, but is still in solid condition. This will look great in your GAR collection, especially around your GAR coat!
