This is a General Staff Officer's coat button from the late 1800's. The button is two piece in design, and utilizes a shank. It is back marked J.H. WILSON Phila. PA. James H. Wilson was in business from 1873 into the early 1900's. The eagle is facing to the right on this domed button. In it's right talon it clutches three arrows. The left talon clutches a laurel branch. The shield in the center of the eagle has no stars. These buttons were used during the Indian Wars on coats worn by officers serving on a General's Staff.
