This is a black leather scabbard with tin mounts for a side knife from the 1800's. The construction of the scabbard appears to be from the mid 1800's, but there is no provenance with this one. I found a similar one in the Confederate Bowie Knife book on page 196. There are several scabbard throughout the book that have tin mounted scabbards. There are not any that show the large belt loop sewn to the scabbard though. The scabbard measures 10" in length, 1 3/4" wide at the widest point and 1/4" at the tip of the scabbard, and the overall length of the scabbard is 16". The leather is very pliable, but thin on the back side of the scabbard. The top and bottom edges of the scabbard have been reinforced with tin. The scabbard shows tons of usage, but is still in very strong condition. It is entirely possible that this one was around during the Civil War, and I believe is not a factory made item. The belt loop is securely stitched to the scabbard, and is of a different leather than the scabbard body. While I am convinced it is a survivor of the war, I have no documentation to support that. So it is presented to you as a leather scabbard with tin mounts for a sizable side knife.
