This is a General Staff Officer's coat button from the late 1800's. The button is two piece in design, and utilized a shank. It is back marked GOODWINS PAT JULY 27 1875. The eagle is facing to the right on this domed button. In it's right talon it clutches four arrows. The left talon clutches a laurel branch. The shield in the center of the eagle has 7 stars. These buttons were used during the Indian Wars on coats worn by officers serving on a General's Staff.
