This is an enlisted man's US Model 1872 Light Cavalry saber. These sabers were used from 1872 through the Indian Wars into the 1890'2. This model would eventually be replaced by the Model 1904 saber. The sword, smaller and lighter than the Model 1860, showed that the military was going away from the sword and more towards the firearm for principle weaponry for the Cavalry. This particular sword measures 39 1/4" in total length, with a blade length of 33 3/4". The small blade has a 3/16" spine and is 13/16" wide at the hilt. The blade has an even steel gray ptina, with some black spotting across the entire length. There are no makers stamps on the blade. This is mostly likely an import saber and scabbard. The leather washer is missing in action. The guard does not depict the eagle, sunburst design or 13 stars as does the officer's version. The front of the guard has no etching or designs either. The two branch guard is very similar to the one found on the Model 1860. The guard is loose on the grip and has some wobble on the blade. The grip has none of the original leather remaining. Only a small section of the double strand brass wire remains, under the pommel cap. The left side of the grip is cracked from the guard back about 2". The scabbard has taken on a dark, aged appearance, but is free of pitting or dents. The two mounts and rings show moderate wear. The drag is present, but missing one of the mounting screws. Overall, this is a decent example of the Army's final hurrah for the cavalry saber that saw any practical use.
