This is a Grand Army of the Republic buckle on the original cloth belt. The GAR was a veterans organization that was formed by Benjamin Stephenson on 6 April, 1866. It was composed of Union veterans of the American Civil War. In the beginning the GAR was available as a way for veterans to meet and stay in contact with each other after the war ended. They soon grew into one of the most powerful political organizations of their time. The off white cloth belt has an overall length of 49" and is 2" wide. The belt adjuster, buckle and keeper are all present and made of brass. The buckle face measures 3" wide and 2" high. It has the GAR medallion in the center and the letters G A R surrounding it. These were pretty common at one time, but not so much now. The cloth belt does have some black staining, but it is almost exclusively on the inside part of the belt. It still displays quite well. This will look great in your GAR collection, especially around your GAR coat!
