Civil War Artillery Friction Primer
Item #: AA1347
This is a riker case containing a Civil War friction primer. The friction primer used for artillery was a small brass tube filled with black powder. It was ignited by drawing a rough, twisted wire, quickly through a friction composition. This composition was contained in a smaller tube that was inserted into the larger, powder filled tube near the top at a right angle and soldered in place. A lanyard, with a hook attached to a striker, was pulled by the gunner of the piece to ignite the primer. These primers came in packages of 10, wrapped in water proof paper. That case will make a great display for the beginning "Red Leg" collector in the family.
