This is a letter of recommendation for Private Clarence B. Grantier of the 6th Pennsylvania Reserves, written by his former company commander, Captain William Henry Harrison Gore. Grantier mustered into company I, 35th Pennsylvania Infantry, on 22 October, 1861. The 35th was part of the 6th Pennsylvania Reserve. He was transferred to the Pennsylvania 191st infantry on 31 May, 1864 when the 35th was mustered out of service. Captain Gore was the commander of I Company from 22 April, 1861 until his promotion to Major on 1 September, 1863. Gore mustered out of the Army on 16 June, 1864. The campaign history of the 35th includes Dranesville, Virginia, 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness and the final battle at Bethesda Church, Virginia. Clarence Grantier survived the war, but not much is known about him other than that. The letter was written on 26 August, 1864 from Oswego, New York. The penmanship is remarkable and is very easy to read. It states: "This is to certify that I have been acquainted with Clarence B. Grantier since he joined my company in Oct. 1861;he has an untarnished reputation as a gentleman and a soldier. Ever ready to do his duty both in camp and in the field. Gentlemanly and respectful in his deportment; faithful and honest in his engagements. I would respectfully recommend him for any position when bravery honesty and integrity are requisite." The letter is signed W.H.H. Gore/ late Major 6th Pa Res/ Oswego NY. Formerly Capt Co. I./ Aug 26th 1864. This small but sincere note has survived extremely well. Whether you collect documents or Pennsylvania memorabilia, this little framed letter will look good in either. The frame measures 6 1/4" wide by 9 1/2" tall.
