This is a Carte de Vista of James A. Garfield, 20th President of the United States. The image measures 2 3/8" wide and 4" tall. It shows Garfield in a bust portrait facing to the left. He is dressed in a suit with a bow tie. The image has good clarity and contrasts well with the background. There is no back mark on the card. All the corners are crisp and straight and the image is free of stains. There is a crease in the center part of the image that goes about two inches down. It is noticeable when the light hits the image a certain way. James Garfield was born 19 November 1831 in Orange Township, Ohio. He began a career in politics at the early age of 26. He would eventually serve 9 terms in the House of Representatives. He was serving as a member of the Ohio State Senate when the Civil War broke out. Garfield opposed secession and served in the Union Army as a Major General. He was involved at the battles of Middle Creek, Shiloh and Chickamauga. He survived the war and again returned to politics. He was elected the 20th President of the United States in 1881, but served only 200 days of his term. James Garfield was shot by Charles Guiteau on 2 July, 1881, most of those trying to recover from the shooting. He died on 19 September, 1881.
