This is a Carte de Vista of Major General Alfred H. Terry of the Union Army. Terry was educated at Yale University and had no military experience prior to the Civil War. At the outbreak of the war he helped raise the 2nd Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He then helped raise the 7th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry and was appointed the Colonel of the regiment. In April 1862 he was promoted to Brigadier General. In 1864 Terry was first a division commander, then a corps commander during the seige of Petersburg, Virginia. General Terry was responsible for leading the second attack on Ft. Fisher, North Carolina in January, 1865. This attack effectively sealed the Confederacy's last port. Alfred Terry remained in the army after the Civil War and command troops during the Indian Wars out west. George Custer was under Terry's command when his 7th Cavalry was massacred at the Little Big Horn in 1876. This is a less common CDV of a Volunteer commander who remained in the Army and became a career soldier. The CDV is in good condition, with slight soiling along the bottom edge. The corners are sharp and have not been trimmed. There is no back mark, only some pencil markings on the back. The bottom front of the CDV is marked MAJ GEN TERRY. The CDV is in an acrylic case and displays well.
