This is a CDV of Major General George H. Thomas of the Union Army during the American Civil War. Thomas is shown in a bust view wearing the frock coat of a Major General. The image is very clear and shows only one small blemish. It is a smudge on the bottom where Thomas's name is printed. The top of the image has been trimmed off, approximately 1/4". It is the white border that has been trimmed, with the corners now being rounded off. There is no back mark on this CDV, only a couple of pencil markings. The image is in an acrylic case and displays well. Thomas was born in Virginia, but unlike many other Virginians, he chose to remain loyal to the Union Army. Thomas was a West Point graduate and fought in both the Mexican War and the Seminole wars. He was promoted for gallantry twice during the Mexican War. He served briefly in the Eastern theater, then was sent west to Kentucky and was in command at Mill Springs. He arrived to late to fight at Shiloh, but was appointed commander of the Union Army of Tennessee after Grants was relieved of that command. He went on to fight at Perrryville Ky, the Battle of Stones River, the Tullahoma campaign. He commanded a Division at Chichamauga, where he earned the nickname "The Rock of Chickamauga" after his stubborn defense of Snodgrass Hill on the second day of battle. At the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tn. his men broke through the Confederate lines and caused the Rebels to rout. He was sent north from the Atlanta campaign with two corps to deal with General Hood's Army of Tennessee who was threatening Sherman's rear. Major General Thomas attacked and destroyed the Confederate Army of Tennessee at the Battle of Nashville, one of the most decisive battle of the war. This is a nice CDV of one of the Union's best field commanders.
