This is a Southern Cross of Honor presented to John T. Haskell. The Southern Cross of Honor was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and established in 1898. It was bestowed upon Confederate veterans who displayed "Loyal and Honorable service to the South". The medal was first issued in 1900. A search of the database revealed one J.T. Haskell. John T. Haskell is listed as a member of the 1st Regiment, Confederate Cavalry. A footnote also listed several Confederate cavalry units by numerical designation or named, usually for the unit's commander. The only information listed for John Haskell is that he mustered into the "1st Regiment, Confederate Cavalry" as a private and mustered out as a private. I'm sure there is more information available for someone with a little more time to do the research. Nice piece of Confederate history for the UCV collectors out there.
