Southern Cross of Honor
Item #: AA967
This is a Southern Cross of Honor presented to William T. Munroe. The Southern Cross of Honor was created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and established in 1898. It was bestowed upon Confederate veterans who displayed "Loyal and Honorable service to the South". The medal was first issued in 1900. A search of the database revealed several William Munroe's, but only one W.T. Munroe. Munroe was a member of C Company, 11th Virginia Infantry. The unit was organized in Lynchburg, Virginia in May 1861 and was accepted into the Confederate Army in July of 1861. The 11th was made up of men from Campbell, Botetourt, Montgomery, Fauquier, Culpeper and Rockbridge counties. These men fought at the battle of First Bull Run under the command of General Longstreet. Later they fought under the command of General J.E.B. Stuart at Dranesville, Virginia. The 11th Virginia served in the Army of Northern Virginia under the commands of Generals A.P. Hill, James Kemper and W.R. Terry. This Virginia infantry unit fought in nearly every engagement of the eastern campaign of the Civil War. At war's end only one officer and 28 men of the 11th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia surrendered under General Lee at Appomattox. The only information I could find on William Munroe is that he mustered into the 11th Virginia as a private and mustered out as a private. I'm sure there is more information available for someone with a little more time to do the research. Nice piece of Confederate history for the UCV collectors out there.
